The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

Rai sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Drama

The champion entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
