British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
